Cleaning irrigation channels and opening dams is underway

Agência do Zambeze > News > Cleaning irrigation channels and opening dams is underway

Irrigation canals are being cleaned and dams opened in the Mafambisse and Búzi clusters, in the districts of Dondo and Búzi, in Sofala Province, with a view to ensuring the irrigation of field crops.

This activity, according to the provincial delegate of the Zambezi Agency in Sofala, Charles Parreirão, “will guarantee the irrigation of around a thousand hectares in order to cover the water impact of the crops of the first season and ensure production in the second season in order to ensure food availability”.

It should be remembered that in 2023, the provinces of Sofala and Zambézia benefited from equipment with the aim of ensuring resilience to climate adversity in potentially productive areas cyclically affected by cyclones and floods.

The climate resilience units enable the opening and maintenance of protection dykes, drainage ditches, irrigation channels, dams and fish ponds for better water resource management.

The machinery was provided by the Government of Mozambique, through the Zambezi Agency, with the support of Italian Cooperation.
