The Tsangano District in Tete Province hosted the 15th edition of the Nyau Gule Wamkulu Provincial Festival today (8 August).
The event, organised by the Tete Provincial Government, featured eight groups from the districts where this cultural tradition is practised.
The festival aims to promote and preserve Nyau Gule Wamkulu, a traditional and ancient dance of the Chewa people. Furthermore, it seeks to strengthen unity amongst communities and instil in younger generations the importance of valuing their origins and cultural identity.
Nyau Gule Wamkulu was designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.
