The Zambeze Agency and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) signed a memorandum of understanding today in Maputo, aimed at promoting resilience and sustainable and inclusive development in the country’s Central Region (Tete, Manica, Sofala and Zambézia).
The agreement provides for cooperation between the institutions in the areas of land use planning, technical and financial assistance, as well as humanitarian aid.
Speaking at the event, the IOM Head of Mission in Mozambique, Laura Tomm, stated that the memorandum represents an opportunity to align national migration and development agendas, ensuring that no one is left behind.
“Our joint efforts will focus on improving infrastructure resilience, expanding access to clean energy and improving water supply and sanitation systems,” explained the IOM representative.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Zambeze Agency, Celso Cunha, believes that the partnership will facilitate the provision of humanitarian assistance, as well as recovery and reconstruction efforts.
The memorandum will support “the creation of a database on migration in the country’s Central Region, in order to drive innovation and efficiency in our migration operations”, said the director.
